Who?
My name is Julian, I'm 24 years old and I'm currently on my first year of studying music in the Icelandic University of the Arts. I'm mostly a guitarist, but I really consider myself to be more of a jack of all trades, master of none type of a person. I'm deeply interested in technology in music and have been focusing on ambient and experimental electronic music for the past year as a way to explore that field in a deeper, more meaningful way. When I'm not experimenting with electronics I usually tend to write folk music or various kinds of subgenres of indie rock that I find to be fun in the moment. Outside of music I really enjoy photography, writing poetry and being really annoying both in person and online.
Why?
Return Signal was developed as a way for me to document my life in a better, more put together environment that I can update from anywhere at any time. As much as I enjoy writing in a physical diary, I always had issues with bringing it around with me and writing in it without being able to edit what I wrote later on. Sure you can do some chicken scratches and pretend like it never happened, but that's not something that I ever liked doing. Thus, the idea for a digital diary was spawned. I tried all the usual stuff you'd think of; cloud-based notes, substack, online drives, it just didn't do it for me. After a lot of mediocre experiences and disappointments, I kind of just said fuck it and decided to make my own website. Return Signal is a result of that, my first website that serves as both a digital diary and a portfolio for my work. A little screenshot of my life in the present, and hopefully the distant future too.
When?
The development of this website began on 20th of March, 2026. Nothing is set in stone and everything is subject to change.
Updates?
(27th of March) Listening log added.
(26th of March) Work on photography site continues, planning to implement galleries or collections of sorts. So far I'm mostly working on gathering the best material for that. I've also started to work on a listening log section for the site, where I'm able to document the records I've listened to on a day-to-day basis. Some reworks due for the sidebar layout.
(24th of March) In terms of the website, I plan on implementing a fully developed version of the photography section, as well as a potential blog page for my long-form ramblings on specific topics that I have interest in. In terms of music, I'm constantly working on something. Currently my main projects are: Untitled experimental guitar album / Untitled ambient album / Recording, producing and mixing a solo saxophone/percussion record for Kjartan Hugi RĂșnarsson / Mixing various albums and singles for people I am happy to call my friends.
